How It Functions

This is not a portfolio of objects. It is a map of thinking.

Asking not what something is, but how it functions. By shifting the question, I create various expressions of connected points, where the connections are a metapattern and modality in and of themselves.

Each node is a piece of work. Each edge is a real relationship — thematic, political, formal. Explore by clicking any node. Use the Grief / Growth toggle to shift the ambient register. The parallel edges (dashed gold) reveal pieces that answer the same question from opposite sides of the duality.

"With grief in our seeds, the flowers will bloom — not as they were, but as something new."

03 — About
Ty Orchards

Ty Orchards

Interdisciplinary artist, activist, and philosopher based in Los Angeles. My work lives in the space between grief and bloom — between the rage that injustice demands and the beauty that rage is fighting for.

I make music, visual art, writing, film, and whatever else the idea requires. Everything I make is in service of dignity politics: the irreducible worth of every living thing, and the structures that spend every day pretending otherwise.

"Our clarity needn't be absent of rage / For something so worthy and needing of change"

The work holds both the unflinching name of what is wrong, and the living proof that something different is possible. The gear and the sprout. The cycle and the break.
